CULTURAL SUPPORTS & PLANNING

Our cultural support service offers a range of culturally appropriate services that recognise the importance and value of family, extended family, kinship networks, culture and community, in raising Aboriginal children and young people.

Cultural Plans

Cultural plans are personalised plans that aim to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in out-of-home care have access to culturally appropriate supports and resources that promote their connection to their cultural identity and community. Our cultural plans are always done in partnership with the family and completed by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander consultant.

Family Finding

Family Finding is a process that aims to reconnect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who have been removed from their families with their biological families and communities. Family finding seeks to connect children and young people with family and other important kin who will love and care for them now and across their lifespan.

Mentoring

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff are mentors who provide positive role modelling, guidance, and support to help children and young people develop a strong sense of identity and connection to their culture. Mentoring is tailored to each participant with personalised goal setting that assists individuals to deepen their connection to culture and self.

Cultural Consultations

One Future offers cultural consultations for individuals or organisations who wish to seek guidance from an independent agency to better understand and navigate cultural differences in a particular context, for example, out of home care. Cultural consultations can involve one-on-one sessions with a cultural consultant or group workshops and training sessions.

Life Story Work

Life story work is a powerful tool for promoting healing, personal growth, and well-being. It can help individuals to gain a deeper sense of their personal history and identity, and to find meaning and purpose in their lives. This is important for children and young people who have been removed from their families, and culture. Our consultants are experienced in, and work sensitively with families to capture and record a child/young person's unique life history.

Culturally Specific Assessments

Whilst our practice is always culturally-focused, there may be times when assessments require in-depth exploration of a child or young person's culture, including consultation with family, kin and community. One Future can tailor assessments to the need of the child and agency to support decision making that aligns with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Placement Principles.

WHAT IS CULTURAL SUPPORT?

One Future is committed to addressing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in out-of-home care and prioritising the need to reduce disadvantage among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.  Most significantly, One Future focuses on providing a service that supports the self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families as being at the heart of causing significant and lifelong change.

Who is it for?

Our services are offered to any agency working with First Nations children, young people, their family and kin who require independent, professional consultants to support decision-making and engage respectfully and sensitively with families.
